What is "Sport Psychology"

The world of sport psychology can be shrouded to performers, resulting in misunderstanding and often viewing it as a taboo subject carrying negative connotations. So let's clear things up...

πŸ”Ž Sport psychology simply aims to improve the performance and well-being of individuals through a range methods

πŸ”Ž Its more than mental health! Yes mental health is important and forms a key aspect of sport psychology, but there are literally endless topics within sport psychology, all different and unique from one another that impact performance

πŸ”Ž Anyone can see a sport psychologist. Old or young, novice or Olympian, boxer or chess player. A sport psychologist can even help non-athletes, including dancers, actors or businesses. Performance is performance and a psychologist can help

πŸ”Ž You don't have to be struggling to work with a sport psychologist! Our discipline is not clinical, there do not need to be symptoms of poor mental health. It may be the case a practitioner can present new ways of coping, or enhancing your motivation to levels you never thought possible

Tim Grover

A personal trainer recognised as working with some of the best athletes in the world including: Kobe Bryant, Dwayne Wade and Michael Jordan. His knowledge in pushing athletes beyond their limits is second to none and shares valuable insight into his experiences in his book "Relentless: From Good to Great to Unstoppable" which is where this quote origionates.Β

Jessica Ennis-Hill

A British Olympic legend. Jessica won gold and silver at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games respectively. Safe to say she knows her stuff. I love this quote not only because it is incredibly motivating, but it perfectly encapsulates how we are not our thoughts and that defusing from the ones that move us away from our vales means you increase your freedom to perform becuase you are more psychologically flexible.Β

The Coach-Athlete Relationship

Behind every performer is a coach and the relationship between coach and athlete is essential for performance and ensuring quality in training.Β

The coach athlete relationship can be such a critical factor in performance. If you don't get along with your coach or athlete working towards a common goal becomes a strain.Β

In order to make working together a fulfilling experience for both parties we can follow the 3Cs + 1. If coach and athlete are aligned in these areas a strong bond flourishes and freedom to perform increases - much like the relationship between Mr Miyagi and Daniel LaRusso in Karate Kid!

Have a watch and see points where the 3Cs + 1 comes up!

Tiger Woods

Wise words from the greatest.Β

Yes we want every detail of a performance to be razor sharp and executed to the best of our ability, but if we get bogged down in all the little details in competition it becomes all-consuming, pulling us out of the moment and ultimately stressing us out. Strive for perfect in training, but on the day perfection isn't a MUST but a WANT.Β

Think less, do more. Let the performance happen.
